Ode to Alexis Mehlhoff

I decided that I was going to write different blogs about my wonderful friends that God has so graciously blessed me with. The first one is going to be Alexis Mehlhoff because I told her about how I was going to do this so she can be first!

Ode to Alexis Mehlhoff

Alexis Mehlhoff has brown hair
A girl like her is very rare
She's clever and witty and extraordinarily sweet
without her as a friend my life would not be complete
The perfect companion to have by your side
I know one day she will be a beautiful bride (... huh?! huh?!)
She's quiet, gentle, compassionate and wise
She's so much more than what meets the eyes
To think that I've only know her two years
I'll raise up my glass to that and say, "cheers!"
"Cheers to many, many more years!"

Alexis has been my friend for two years (like the poem said) and we have had an amazing time to get to know each other! She is really funny and I love that she thinks that I am funny... it makes me feel better about myself (hahaha although now I sound either 1. extremely egotistical or 2. extremely lacking in the self-esteem department).

She's really beautiful! But the beauty isn't just external it's also internal! And she is extremely wise! I love hearing her talk about the things that God has been teaching her because she looks at things in a different way than I do and so it helps me get a better perspective on things.

I also love that she loves children just like me! Some day we will be married and have a family and hang out together! I'm excited for those days! We get to talk about the crazy stupid stuff together that you don't really think that girls talk about... but they do...or at least Alexis and I do... like the possibility of potentially being pregnant at the same time and then hypothesizing that if one had a girl and the other had a boy that the two would marry...

I love hanging out at her apartment and cooking together... or rather she cooks for me because I never bring anything over! I also love that sometimes she makes cooking blunders like I do and occasionally sets off the smoke alarm or starts a small fire in the kitchen. It makes me feel a little better about my inability to use a microwave!

I love that she is unphased by my incessant singing.
I love that she isn't afraid to share her opinion.
I love that she sticks to her convictions.
I love that she is grounded in her identity in Christ.
I love that she doesn't let the past dictate her future.
I love that her favorite color is purple.
I love that we can go a day without seeing each other and feel like it's been years since we last talked.
I love that we can be satisfied with one anothers company even if we're sitting in a room doing completely different activities.
I love that we have the same taste in music.
I love that she is short.
I love that she will play at the park with me.
I love that she is passionate.
I love that she is shy... but then not really.
I love that she is compassionate.
I love that God saved her.
I love that she desires to be obedient to God in her life.
I love that she is patiently impatient... Just like me!
I love that she is a servant.
I love that she is dependable.
I love that she is courageous.
I love that she perseveres.
I love that she is honest.
I love that she is trustworthy.
I love that she is encouraging.
I love that she is my friend.
I love that she loves.

Oh! And I love that no matter what her facial expression, Alexis always looks beautiful while I manage to look like a complete psycho...

Exhibit A, B and C:

And I love that she loves when I sing this song to intentionally sound horrible!

The Art of Giving

I was reading in 2 Corinthians, which I love, and the topic that the Lord highlighted to me recently is the act of generous giving. The verse that really caught my eye was 2 Corinthians 9:7

"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Giving isn't anything spectacular if you're not doing with the right heart attitude. This verse says that we shouldn't give reluctantly or under compulsion. I looked up the word compulsion, because to be honest I can use the word correctly in a sentence but I couldn't really define it for you, and it means a strong, usually irresistible impulse to perform an act, especially one that is irrational or contrary to one's will. The Lord doesn't want us to give because of impulse. That's really interesting because often times there are opportunities to give that cause you to do it on impulse but this verse highlights that God wants us to put thought and prayer into the decisions we make on giving. We shouldn't give reluctantly and we shouldn't give irrationally either.

I really like how the end of this verse says that God loves a cheerful giver. This clearly emphasizes that God is indeed looking at our hearts when we give and that we should do it with His joy. This, for me, is something I need to work on not only in giving but also in serving. Often times I can do something because I feel that I am obligated to do it but I don't do it with the joy of the Lord. It's such a pity when that happens because there is so much to be gained from giving and serving with the joy of the Lord. It not only makes the task that much better but it also glorifies God more!

"This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God." 2 Corinthians 9:12

I love the result of giving, that it not only supplies the needs of God's people but more importantly that it causes and overflowing of thanksgiving to God! How awesome is it that our simple act of kindness can bring people to praise God and be thankful to Him?! Is that not the whole reason that we are alive, to glorify God?

"We Put No Stumbling Block in Anyone's Path"

I was at the hospital today with my mother and I was reading through 2 Corinthians when I found the most amazing passage ever! I think it is so awesome!

We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonment and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything." 2 Corinthians 6:3-10

I wanted to memorize this verse so I wrote it down in my journal and I was super excited just to think about all of these things that Paul is talking about.

"We put no stumbling block in anyone's path so that our ministry will not be discredited" This verse really hits home for me because I am super sensitive to the way I conduct myself so that I don't stumble non-believers. Obviously there are many times that I fail in this manner and stumble people on the way that I conduct myself but I really do think it is so important not to act in a way that stumbles not only non-believers but other Christians. I remember Adam Poole telling our class that his father was stumbled from coming to the Lord for so long because of the conduct of Christians that he had interacted with. When I heard that it saddened my heart because I realized just how important our actions are in showing that we are walking with God and not simply claiming to be Christians while still living wordly lives.

We are to be set apart! And I like that Paul says, they put no stumbling block in anyone's path so that their ministry wont be discredited. Discredited means to injure the reputation of, defame, to show to be undeserving of trust or belief, destroy confidence in. That's so intense! Wouldn't that be so sad if the way that we conducted ourselves caused someone to loose confidence in a transformed life in Christ.

"Rather, as servants of God we should commend ourselves in every way" Instead of putting up stumbling blocks with our conduct Paul says that we should commend ourselves in every way. The word commend means to present, mention, or praise as worthy of confidence. So instead of being stumbling blocks that cause people to distrust the ministry we need to live lives that show that it is worthy of confidence!

Then Paul starts to list off ways that we should present that our ministry is worthy of confidence. Really just think about what each one means or what it looks like:

"in great endurance;" - We show ourselves commendable when we have great endurance.

"in troubles, hardships and distresses;" - I think it's cool that right after great endurance Paul talks about showing ourselves commendable in troubles, hardships and distresses. How we handle the hard things in life is very important, and I think that great endurance is one way that we can show ourselves commendable through the tough seasons in life. James 1:12 says, "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."

"in beatings, imprisonments and riots;"  - In beatings and imprisonments and riots we're supposed to show ourselves commendable? I haven't suffered through any physical persecution in the time I've been a Christian but I think that it would be extremely hard to remain commendable during beatings and imprisonments and riots. Something that has always struck me in the book of Acts is Acts 5:40-41 "...They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name." That's so powerful because they were able to rejoice even after being flogged! Man, how that glorifies God when we can be persecuted and rejoice!

"in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;" - This verse hits home because we show ourselves commendable by working hard! We aren't called to mooch off of people or to be lazy and slack off, we're called to be hard workers. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 says, "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody." And there are also many proverbs that speak about being a diligent hard worker and not slothful or lazy.

"in purity, understanding, patience and kindness;" - I love how Paul changes from the more negative aspects of the Christian life, like the fact that we'll go through trials and persecutions, and turns to the more positive aspects. We need to be pure, understanding, patient and kind. This reminds me of the attributes of love, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs" (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). And these four ways that we're supposed to commend ourselves also remind me of Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control."

"in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love;" - I think this could be my favorite part of this passage because it's seems so plain that the way to be commendable is by walking in the Spirit! In our own flesh and our own self-will we cannot accomplish living a life that is characterized by these things it is only through a life lived walking in the Spirit. And then I like how it goes on to say that it's also in sincere love. Not just love because love can definitely be fake but in true, genuine, sincere love!

"in truthful speech and in the power of God;" - Don't lie. We all know that but it's easy to forget or just ignore sometimes, however God calls us to be honest people. In order to not stumble people we need to commend ourselves in every way including truthful speech. And then in the power of God! This is another awesome portion of this scripture because it is a fact that without the power of God we cannot walk out a godly life. It's all in God's power that He gives to us to walk in this way! That's so awesome! "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires" (2 Peter 1:3-4).

"with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left;" - I like this because the Christian life is a battle and to know that we are using weapons of righteousness and have them in both hands that shows that we are prepared for the battle. It reminds me of Ephesians 6:11-17 "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces if evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

"through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report" - No matter what the situation be it to our glory or dishonor we are supposed to conduct ourselves in proper manner that shows that what we believe in is worthy of confidence, no matter the circumstance.

"genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown;" - To regard means to look upon or think of with a particular feeling. In this that means that our conduct is genuine but people look at it us being impostors, like we aren't genuine. And the same with being known you people seeing us as unknown. I feel like I can relate to this section because of different things that I've experienced but even when we are being genuine and others view us as impostors we are still supposed to maintain commendable conduct.

"dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet we are not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;" - I love that it says we are sorrowful but we're always rejoicing. Even though we do have sorrow and pain we also have so much hope in future glory and so though we mourn we can still rejoice. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 says, "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope." This is our hope, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade -kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time" (1 Peter 1:3-5).

"poor, yet making many rich;" - I absolutely love how this part says that we're poor but we are making many rich! It's not material, worldly riches that we're giving to make people rich but it's the riches that come from God! The great inheritance that we have through Christ! That's just so awesome! I love it!!

"having nothing, and yet possessing everything." - And I love this part that says we have nothing but we possess everything. This is so true! Though it seems like in this world we might have nothing we really do have everything because we have God and He is all we really need. He is everything!

Pondering Song Lyrics

One of my favorite things to do is listen to song lyrics! I love when the lyrics are super powerful and they always seem to put to words exactly what I've been feeling or they make me think about things in a brand new way! One song that I have listened to that has particularly impacted me is "They Need Love" by Jonny Diaz. One verse of the song is, "If she doesn't somehow catch an eye, she'll sleep out in the cold tonight. So she works the corner with fishnets on just blocks away from the house of God. She claims she'll never go inside she doesn't think that it would feel right. But what if we stepped out to her, with love that she didn't have to earn. She needs love and lots of it before she'll ever open up. She needs grace from God above but from us she needs love."

This is so powerful! It's talking about a prostitute who's thought about entering the house of God but ended up not doing so because she doesn't think that it will suit her. The thing that hits me the hardest is when it says "but what if we stepped out to her?"... What if we stepped out to her?! How many people are out there hurting and searching for love who would receive it if we merely stepped out to them! It's so mind blowing because I look at my life and how I can stay in my comfortable little bubble of happiness and bliss, fellowshipring with believers and only breaching the gap with my family and friends that I am comfortable with and who are familiar to me. But what about the others? What about the poor, the hurting, the lost?! What about the homeless, the prostitutes, the crippled, the unlovable?! What about them?

How my heart breaks for those people who are so lost and without hope and without love desperate for it! In class we did an assignment where we read Mark 5:21-34, the story about the sick woman who had been bleeding for 12 years and was healed by Jesus. While we were going over it we discussed the position this woman was in. First off she was a woman and in that time period women were not favored highly. Secondly she was unclean because of her bleeding and therefore was looked at with disgust and no one would touch her or go near her... For twelve years! How do you think this woman was feeling at this point? She was desperate for healing physically and emotionally.

When she touched Jesus' cloak she was healed and Jesus knowing he'd healed her wanted to see her. It says, "But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering" (Mark 5:32-34). The amazing thing about this especially for the woman was that Jesus listened to her! She told him the whole story and he paid attention to her. This woman who had been scorned for twelve years was experiencing Jesus' love for her.

After all of those years she had to have been thinking that she was the scum of the earth because everyone treated her as if she was. But not Jesus. He loved on her. Tom Ewers said that Jesus probably even knelt down and looked her straight in the eyes as she was on the ground trembling in fear telling her story. He looked at her with love and compassion. He showed her that she was more valuable than she herself thought and he called her daughter.I can't even begin to imagine what it would feel like, to be ridiculed and scorned for twelve years and then loved for the first time.

We have that power!

We have the power to love people like that! Think how many people are hurting in this world. How many people feel like they are nothing. How many people are lonely and dying for a friend. How many people are overwhelmed. How many people are overcome with emotion. How many people are desperate for truth and genuine love.

How many people think that no one would care if they didn't exist.

How many people commit suicide because they have. no. hope.

But there is hope!

Think about the hope that we have! Our hope in Jesus Christ in God in our salvation and future eternal glory! Our hope in the love that the Father has for us! Why would we keep that to ourselves?!

People are dying without hope. How is it that someone can be so completely without hope that they would kill themselves?! That is so heartbreaking to even think about! Especially since we have such a glorious hope in God and His love for us! We need to proclaim that hope to all people!

I know first hand that it is so easy to hide pain. It's so easy to put up a mask and pretend to be happy when really your heart is breaking inside. When you laugh with people on the outside but on the inside you're weeping in agonizing pain only wishing that someone would understand or even notice that your life is crumbling.

One of my hearts desires is that I could have eyes to see the pain that people cover up. How awesome would it be to have the discernment to see someone who is dying on the inside and be able to reach out to them and love on them! What would that do for them?! Don't you want to be the kind of person that loves with all your heart?! Don't you want to be the kind of person that could radically change a persons life with love?! I can't even put to words all that is on my heart with this matter it's just so hard to express!!

There are so  many people hurting and often times we never come into contact with them because they are too afraid to come to us or because they buy the lie that it's not for them! But what if we stepped out to them?! What if we went to them and showed them love?! If we have such an amazing love and hope why are we keeping it all to ourselves?! Why do I keep it to myself?! Why don't I tell people about how much God loves them?! Why do I let fear control my words when I have the Spirit of God living in me?!

We need to step out to those people! We need to love them because no one else will. And we need to love them because God loves them. Because God died for them. They need to know that.

Only One Did That For Me

I was working and listening to the radio the other day and I heard the song "How Many Kings" by Downhere and I absolutely loved the lyrics! It's amazing because it talks about who Jesus is and how he gave up all of his royalty and power to become a human and weak for me, for you, for us! It's just so unbelievably incredible to realize that, and to truly think about all that Jesus did for us so that we could have freedom!

Here are the lyrics:

Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe, after all we've projected,
A child in a manger?
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother's shawl -
Just a child -
Is this who we've waited for?

How many kings step down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?

Bringing our gifts for the newborn Savior
All that we have, whether costly or meek
Because we believe.
Gold for his honor, and frankincense for his pleasure
And myrrh for the cross he will suffer
Do you believe?
Is this who we've waited for?

How many kings step down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me.

All for me...
All for you...

Here's the song if you want to listen to it!
